Sri Lanka has been mining gemstones for over 2,000 years. Ratnapura, the "City of Gems," sits at the heart of this history. The alluvial deposits running through its river valleys still yield some of the finest sapphires, rubies, and rare stones found anywhere on earth. That heritage is real. What is not always real is what happens to a stone between the mine and the buyer.

Where Our Gems Come From
Ratnapura. The City of Gems.
Ratnapura, 100 kilometres southeast of Colombo, has been the centre of Sri Lanka's gem trade for as long as records exist. The name translates directly: Ratna means gems, pura means city. Its river valleys sit on ancient alluvial deposits that concentrate gemstones formed over millions of years. Sri Lanka's unique geology produces stones with exceptional transparency and colour saturation that traders have valued from the ancient world through to today.
Ceylon blue sapphires are valued internationally for their pure, vivid blue with a clarity that darker Burmese material does not replicate. Padparadscha sapphires, the rare salmon-pink variety collectors prize above almost any other coloured stone, are essentially a Sri Lankan phenomenon. Ceylon rubies carry a lighter, transparent pinkish-red character distinct from the deeper Burmese stones.
